beauty is everywhere

Walked pass a path on the way to school the other day. It was a fine sunny day. Flowers were competiting to bloom.

I might miss it if i walked very fast. Sometimes, we just need a break. Slow down. No rush. Life is always fulled of pretty things if we know where to look at.

Auchan!!!!!

After a series of unfortunate events, finally, something great is happening -- New Auchan in 2 weeks!!!! The great thing about it , is that it's located 2 metro stations away from where i live, and it's just about 5 minutes on foot from metro station.

When i first arrived Moscow in March 2005, we were only doing preparatory course and had plenty of extra time. Auchan, was one of my favourite places, lol, because it's the cheapest place to get almost everything.

Though cheap price doesn't really guarantee the quality sometimes, but i found Auchan offers rather good quality stuff, and i like Auchan bakery a lot. They're always fresh, i had even bought breads, pastries that were still warm. Croissants, Sweet-corn breads, Berlinski donuts......yummy.

Apparently, i'm not the only one who is so excited about this :D

Meanwhile, i am hoping more cheap hypermarkets will invest here, such as Carrefour, Tesco, Aldi, Netto, and so on.

Inflation rate in Moscow is really insane, and Auchan, is a mayhem.

Thank you teachers!

Today i had my last class in 3rd year, or in my 6th semester of medical course. Exams are just around the corner, starting from next Tuesday.

Anyway, time to recall some teachers who had great influences on me....

1. Doctor Shulpekova. Y. A.

She's my teacher for subject "internal disease". Undoubtedly, she's our favourite teacher of all time, and we love her so much. We just love her. I think everybody loves her.

She always put herself second, third, fourth or so, after medicine, patients, and students. She never put herself in the first place. She's ready to sacrifice herself for others. She's like a candle which burns herself, just to lighten the darkness, to warm the coldness.

When we don't know how to answer some of her questions, she never blame us nor scold us. She always say, "it's ok, we'll revise the knowledge again and again. I understand students are very busy with so many subjects."

I never see she uses a negative word. She never say 'this is bad", but instead, she says we can do better.

Sometimes, she was on duty/on call, and we had class the next day. However, she tried to show us how energetic she was, she never said she was tired , though those red eyes revealed her secrets.

"very good. I can see group 2 is excellent. I can see future excellent doctors...." All the compliments she gave us, i felt a bit 'shy' since i don't think i am that good, and I don't usually force myself to study hard, and to be honest, i even used the time to study other stuff, rather than spending on revising her homework. I'm sorry :D But i will promise i'll study hard for this coming final exams.

I really feel reluctant to neglect her. She is just too nice.

Thank you teacher. You left footprints in my life. I really appreciate you , and i will never forget you. Medicine is hard, but with your encouragement, it's not so hard.

2. Elena Glebovna

She's my Russian language teacher, the best Russian language teacher ever through out these 3 years. Our class was always fulled of laughters. She told great jokes.

She always say that , she will never let her daughter to study in such a faraway country. Once, her daughter went to London with a school trip, just for 2 weeks. But she had been worrying of her daughter all the while.

That's why, just like a mother, she treats us like her kids.

3. N. G. Bondarchuk

She's one of the smartest person i have ever seen. I was amazed that she could do oral tests with students will marking papers and supervise students. Amazing. Wonder how she is so multi-task-taker.

It was this story that made I admire her. Once, a student didn't prepare well for the exams. She insisted not to pass the student, "As a doctor, these are some of the basic knowledge you should have. Please prepare well , and come again." She thought of the student's future, as well as the lives of patients.

In Russia, students who sit for the exams late will be charged, as they will consume teachers' "extra time". She usually give chances to students, or at least a certain period to clear the exams. She doesn't mind not being paid to spend extra time to have oral tests with the students, but she wants the students to study well.

*******************

Thank you teachers! Thank you for everything, you don't just provide me medical knowledge, but your attitudes, are what i admired you all the most.

All the best. God bless you all.

suicide

A resident of my hostel committed suicide few days ago; While we medical students are studying hard, trying to learn all the skills to save a patient's life....

I just feel sorry for him. My condolence to him and his family.

Last Saturday i had a lecture about 'neurosis'. In fact, each and everyone of us, has more or less a little bit of neurosis, or better to say, we have neurotic reaction sometimes through out our lives.
(Neurosis refers to people who have mental problems, usually they're severely mentally ill, but neurotic reaction is more to a temporary process, such as when we're down and moody.)

I read this somewhere in books about buddhism, "if someone committed suicide this life, he/she'll continue committing suicide for the next 7 (reincarnated) lives." Apparently this suicide thought will haunt him/her.

That's why, always be careful of our thoughts. Always think positively, even though there're times that we feel so helpless, but of course, everyone has his own issues, not just like Emo. (see video below.)

let's take care of people around us. A simple smile, a simple greet can lighten up someone's day.

russian language vs english language

source of image: www.impawards.com/2007/posters/numb.jpg

You know what, when i first saw this poster, straight away, i read it "pit". Later i realised that Matthew Perry was spelt in English, not in Russian :D

English letter: Russian letter
p : n
i : u
t : m
b : soft sign (not pronounced, but it means the last syllable of the word is pronounced softly.

Russian language has great influences on me since i first learned it...i'm always confused with some small words or particles, like in/on the street, in/on a bus, etc....

Not changing to face changes

I always insist not to write sad, awful, grumpy things on my blog; i believe everything has its bright sides, and learning to look on the bright side of lives makes lives easier.

However, i just can't help it now, i've to write this down just to convey my anger in an appropriate way instead of throwing faeces into the dean office or something insensible.

"Not changing, just stay quiet and wait and see what's going on, then take the action."

This year is my 3rd year in Russia, but i still don't know why, i didn't learn this technique i mentioned above.

Another great thing you can learn in this country is "patience".

There're few things i just don't quite understand and i try to understand it, but eventually, i choose not to understand because they're just 'nelzia paniat', they just couldn't be understood. So, do myself a favour, stop torture myself.

1. English medium dean office , apparently, people work every day, but it's only open to students on Tuesday and Thursday, 2pm-6pm. If you have classes during these two periods, i'm sorry, you can't get in.

Q: what the XXXX are they doing during other time?

2. Student visa section. Same thing, only open to students on Tuesday and Thursday, 2-6pm.

Q: Wow, i didn't realise that there're so many paper works or other works on Mon,Wed,Fri all day.

3. One more thing: 2-6pm, if officers are tired or attacked by smoking addiction, well, sorry, no entrance either. Sometimes smoking may takes up to 30mins, or so.

Q: I just don't understand this kind of attitude.

4. Today, my final exam timetable had changes for the 4th time, within a month, so averagely it's changed every week.

Q: they thought my air ticket is bus ticket? They thought we're just so rich and we can get a flight back home anytime we want?

5. My teacher used to say, "Everything's not confirmed until it has started."

Q: Yes, by the time it's started, could it be too late? Vice dean told us that our exams will be done after certain dates, and told us not to worry to buy our tickets. Oh yeah, i forgot, confirmation is not true until it has started, because verbal confirmation, or even black and white, are just not confirmation, they're just piece of XXXX to get you away from annoying them like flies flying around the SHIT.

I am totally mad with my travel agent here. Lazy to say why, but i think i just don't have to waste my energy to write something about brainless creatures.

Anyway, bright side of life:
1. People always have the reason to do something. (sorry, i just can't do it coz some people just don't need reasons nor excuses to do things, or the reasons are just not acceptable in convention. Sometimes i do ask myself: Am i the only one who disagree with this, or how many people are not satisfy with this or that, or how would i judge is it widely acceptable by most people or not...)

2. Each individual is unique, and each of them grew up in a different environment, with different cultures and stuff. There're not right or wrong for a certain action, it's just different way of doing things. Basically, 2 options: change yourself, accept it. (unfortunately, i choose to avoid it because i can only accept that some people are brainless, and that's it. I have a rather nice temper nowadays, just don't care what people do, as long as i'm not harmed. )

3. As i have mentioned before, just wait and see what's going on.

4. Appreciate my condition. I have heard some cases worse than mine, or if mine is the worst case, then i'm glad, because nothing can be worse. I'm mentally-prepared now.

That's it. I just can't wait to graduate and get out from this place. Really, I've learned a lot of 'life lessons' here, but i think it's enough; i need a break before i can take anymore.

Into the wild

Just finished watching a movie called "into the wild", adapted from a best-seller of the same title, written by Jon Krakaeur.

This is a trailer of the movie:

Well, let you watch the movie, or read the book yourself. I just want to quote something (maybe not be 100% the same as in the movie, i just write it based on my limited memory.)

1. Happiness is real when you shared.
2. When you want something in your life, grab it.
3. When you forgive, you love. When you love, God's light shines on you.

Perhaps, Christopher McCandless (the main character) had found himself through his journey to many places in the States, as well as Mexico. It'll be so great if he could tell us about his adventures.

However, i do not quite agree with "disappearance" , just like that , without a trace. It's true some people are fed up with societies, with all those man-to-man relationship and so on, but no human is an island; but still, we have our family members, esp. if our parents still alive. They're always worry about us, and though we're 30 years old, we're still 3 years old in their eyes.

Adventure is fun, but not when you let others worry too much about you.

Happy Mother's Day

Happy mother's day to all the mothers! Thank you so much.

As a medical student, i do know it's so so so risky to give birth to a child, labour may cause Sheehan's syndome, etc...

Anyway, below is a great clip. check it out. Bet you love it.

Eric's laksa (so-called)

After tasted my friends' laksas, i'm addicted to it. Can't imagine what will happen after i try the authentic Kuching laksa? (Migrate to Kuching? *shhh....so far, i still like Penang food a lot a lot.)

Apparently this is nothing like Kuching laksa, it's more like mild curry unfortunately. Well, i can imagine myself dragging a luggage of laksa paste in Kuching airport soon.

But still, it doesn't taste too bad, it is edible.

Long live Malaysia............Sorry, I mean Malaysian food.

Ondine's curse vs Love

The first time i heard of this story, was during my pathophysiology class. We were discussing cases of patients, and one of them suffers from Ondine's curse, also known as primary alveolar hypoventilation or congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (lousy medical terminology), or put it in a nutshell, it means "loss of involuntary control of breathing."

Involuntary breathing? yes, involuntary breathing happens all the time until we die, and it happens subconsciously and automatically; while voluntary breathing, you can control it, such as taking a deep breath, or stop breathing for few seconds, etc.

Anyway, story time (according to my uni professor)

Version 1:
Ondine was a pretty girl and she fell in love with a young man. Ondine's father didn't like the young man and young man is cursed: He needed to stay awake all the time to breathe voluntarily, if he ever fell asleep (during sleep, breathing is under involuntary control.),he would die. He fell asleep, and so, he died.

***************

and now, i'm revising the case report and i just wikipedia-ed it; and this is another version, probably the real one. Apparently "father objects marriage" cases occur too often, too many stories, such as opera "O mio babbino caro" written by Gianni Schicchi, music composed by Giaccomo Puccini.

here's a clip of the opera (one of my favourite songs)

Anyway, version 2 of Ondine's curse (retold by Eric):

Ondine was a pretty girl. She wouldn't get old, unless she gave birth to a child.

One day, she met Lawrence. They fell in love and they were married. Lawrence made a love vow: "Every waken breath from me, it's a proof of my eternal love to you."

Later, Ondine gave birth to their son soon after, and she started to age. Lawrence didn't like her anymore, because she looked older and older.

Ondine was upset, and she cursed Lawrence: "Since you vowed that your breath was your love to me, and now, you can only breathe when you awake. If you do fall asleep, and you shall DIE!!!!!!!!!"

Lawrence fell asleep, and so he died.

Love, it's what probably keeps us alive.

Sarawak laksa

Haven't been posting for nearly a month. Been busy and kinda lots of things happening lately.

Anyway, would like to 're-start' my post with something yummy, as the saying goes, "A good start accounts for 50% of success."

Thank you Air Asia, for providing so many chances for Malaysians to get around. "Everybody can fly!" is the airline's slogan, but more precisely, everybody can afford to fly! Well, as usual, Air asia is having promotion again, rm10 only , to a few places, including the "Food haven in Eastern Malaysia" -- Kuching.

Apparently, among all the food, Sarawak laksa is a must-eat, perhaps top of the gourmet list.

"I can eat laksa every single morning and won't get bored," said friend A.

"When I travelled to Kuching last time, I ordered laksa wherever i go. I ordered one bowl if it's not very nice, but two bowls if they suited my taste." Added friend B.

"Sarawak laksa is very different from Peninsula de lah~~ Not like asam laksa or penang laksa lah.....It's Sarawak laksa....Hard to explain la.....come and eat then you know loh......."

Well well well, shame on me, as a Malaysian who haven't been to Sarawak yet. Thus, sampling sarawak laksa is on my bucket's list now.

Anyhow, coincidentally, my friends cooked Sarawak laksa today, and i was given the chance to try it!!!!!!!! wahahahahahaha.

Thank you Zer Pin and Lovelyn :D

*shhhhh.....i'm a vegetarian actually.....Please don't tell me how you cook the laksa, just say it's vegetarian ok! The belacan is definitely the best part of it, it's vegetarian belacan hoh, if it's not, please tell me it's vegetarian, white lies won't harm......lol.*
